THE WORKPLACE
Workplace Alcohol and Substance Misuse

Many HR departments, however large or small the company, lack the in-depth knowledge of addictions and substance misuse that Amundsen Consulting can provide for you.  Whether you require short notice help to manage a specific incident, or your policies are not being fully adhered to or implemented, we can assist you to comply with your obligations around issues of drugs and alcohol.  If you do not yet have policies in place we can assist you in drafting policies and protocols that reflect the ethos and culture of your business whilst complying with best practice and statutory obligations.

Policy Design and Implementation

We have experience in helping organisations to develop and implement drug and alcohol policies that are meaningful and genuinely assist when incidents occur.  To achieve this, we will spend time with you to; understand the nature of your business, the nature of any previous incidents involving drugs, alcohol, and your workforce, before helping design policies that will work for you.  Furthermore, we will assist in informing and training staff so that everyone within your company is aware of the boundaries around drugs and alcohol, the reasons the policies exist, and what will happen if individuals do not comply.  The evidence clearly indicates that the biggest challenge of such policies is with their implementation i.e. ensuring managers and supervisors have both the confidence and competence to make appropriate interventions when necessary.  With this in mind we will also develop procedures with you that ensure staff and managers feel empowered to deal with any situation that arises.

Employee Welfare

Effective policies should encourage employees to seek help if they feel they have drug and/or alcohol related problems.  To support you in this, we can carry out confidential assessments of individuals and make evidence based recommendations regarding appropriate clinical interventions such as personal guidance, counselling or specialist rehabilitation.  The objective will be to balance the needs of the individual with the legitimate expectations of managers with the focus on returning to fully effective functioning. Our experience enables us to match each individual and his or her specific needs to the most appropriate intervention.  This service is available to companies either as a stand-alone service or as part of the wider Workplace Alcohol and Substance Misuse package.  We also have established networks with Employee Assistance Providers and can arrange introductions as required.
